Pants’ every day Skincare Regime

September 15, 2013

For many years, I was a believer of less is more. This is something I told myself when it came to my skincare regime, in that I wouldn’t really go above and beyond the morning face wipe/wash and moisturise routine.

I have naturally dry skin, so a lot of soap based products make my face feel especially awful. I try not to use too much on my face, and as part of my morning regime, rely heavily on good quality face wipes rather than washing with soap based products which makes my skin look terrible for the rest of the day.

One thing I will recommend, is invest in the more expensive face wipe, it’s amazing the difference this makes. Some of my favorites at the moment are Superdrug’s Vitamin E wipes, Nivea and Simple. They are relatively cheap to buy as well.

My latest edition, is cleanser and toner. I have no idea how I managed to get through life without these! It’s truly amazing to think of all the gunk and dirt that was left behind on my face – even after exfoliating face washes in the shower. I mostly use The Body Shop’s Vitamin E cleanser and toner, and find this suits me the best. I have tried Simple, and even the aloe Vera range from The Body Shop, but these tend to leave my skin feeling a little dry.

I use Superdrug’s Tea Tree Exfoliating Face wash around 2-3 times a week. I’ve found that out of most brands, this is the best as I like my exfoliating scrubs to feel similar to that of rolling around on sand paper! It leaves my face feeling invigorated and very much awake. This is especially good to take to festivals and I’ve never felt more clean/awake than when I’ve used this. Additionally, I like the Superdrug Tea Tree exfoliating pads which I use most days too.

So, in terms of my regime, my morning starts as follows:

A good quality face wipe to remove most visible dirt, a quick blast of an exfoliating pad just to get down to those nitty gritty bits around 3 times a week. I then cleanse, tone, apply moisturising serum and then my moisturiser. I do the same thing just before bed and ensure that all my makeup has been removed.

Here are some of my top tips for a good skincare regime:

  •  Always use a good quality face wash that suits your skin when you shower. Some people shower daily – I must confess I do not. Be mindful that our skin has natural oils which are often affected with the use of some washes so you may want to consider a milder soap. My exfoliating wash is quite harsh, which is why I use this no more than 3 times a week, and rely on the pads for in between days which are not as harsh.
  • Remove makeup before going to bed. It’s amazing how much grime you can have caked on your skin, and the night time gives it a chance to breathe!
  • Choose a moisturiser for your skin type. If you have naturally oily skin, then something for very dry skin is probably not going to be a good choice. If in doubt, look out for product reviews.

There we have it, my basic skin care regime. I love trying out new skin care products, so keep your eyes peels for reviews!

Totally hellbent for cleansing!

Pants’ top 5 festival life savers for Summer 2013

September 15, 2013

top 5 festival

Well festival season is officially over. Dakesis played Sunkfest and The New Disorder Festival, which were great when it comes to prolonging the post festival blues. Unfortunately, it’s now miserable outside and we are almost half way through September!

With so many memories from this year already what better way to reflect, than to think of all the scrummy products I got to try out whilst in a tent with significantly less access to things that make me look clean.

After much pondering on this, I have come up with my top 5 festival life savers for this year. It took some thought, but these are the 5 products that I absolutely couldn’t have lived without!

  1. Suncream – I absolutely couldn’t have lived without my Simple factor 50 suncream as well as the Coola slightly tinted SPF 20 screen. Gem and I were very silly and had managed to get ourselves burnt to a crisp whilst on our ferry to Holland, but the Coola tinted moisturiser matched my self inflicted shade of orange perfectly, meaning I didn’t need to try make foundation work over my sore, sunburnt, orange and peeling skin
  2. Facial Wipes – This are a must have, decent facial wipes to take off makeup, suncream and dirt. So long as I have these, it’s OK if I run out of toner and cleanser or don’t have access to showering facilities.
  3. Eyebrow Kit – This ranks higher than any other makeup product, with my eyebrows filled out I at least resemble a human being!
  4. Jelly Pong Pong Mascara – When the going get’s hot and sweaty, I am loathed to put makeup on knowing it will run and make me clammy. I love this mascara so much that I didn’t need any eyeliner or eyeshadow to glam up. An application of this left me looking refreshed and glamourous despite having spent 4 days in a field.
  5. Facial Spritz – This was a life saver. It was so hot, that Gem and I were teasing each other by asking ourselves to imagine what it would be like if we were wrapped up in fleece blankets, whilst wearing onsies, with a hot water bottle and a heater on. It may not sound much, but the thought of this was nauseating! In this unbearable heat we took it in turns to spray each other (and our partners) with our recently acquired Glossybox spoil. This facial spritz feels like the most refreshing thing in all of the land when it’s 30 degress, with zero cloud cover, a multitude of black clothing and no shade. This is coming with me to every place that is in danger of reaching 21 degress upwards!

Totally hellbent for looking fab with minimum effort

Pants’ guide to Skin Types

September 7, 2013

People come in all different shapes, sizes and colours and we all have different skin. This often differs throughout our life and perhaps through various times in the year.  I predominantly have dry skin which is often at it’s worse during the winter when the heating is on. During Summer and if I am outdoors more, my skin feels better. I can only presume that this is down to a) more Vitamin D and b) less sitting next to a radiator and basking in a humid environment.

Alas, with winter fast approaching and an inevitable change to my skin care regime, I have put together some information to give you an idea of where your skin might fit. Now I by no means pretend to be a skincare expert but hopefully you will find this useful when pampering, choosing a skin care regime or thinking about the products you are actually buying.

Dry Skin

Our skin is covered in a thin layer of natural lipids (fatty substance) that keep in moisture. There are lots of external and internal issues that may damage or strip this layer and cause dryness:

  • Winter/cold air can play a part in this. As mentioned above, my skin often feels worse throughout Winter when I am sat next to radiators daily and the central heating is on, as well as the harsh cold air which draws moisture out of the skin.
  • Misuse of products – soap or moisturisers may be causing dryness, especially if these are alcohol based or perfumed.
  • Hot Showers/Baths and humid air. We have natural oils which help our skin and hair. So think about this if your shower routine consists of 3 hours in the bathroom twice a day scrubbing away at your skin. These long hot showers/baths can wash away some of these oils leaving skin feeling tight and dry. Limit showers to minutes rather than hours. Try Showers rather than baths, and whilst washing/shaving try and move away from the shower head to minimise the time spent submerged under water. Also try and go for warm water rather than steaming which is good for both your body and your water bill!
  • Clothing – sometimes we can be sensitive to certain products. It may be you have changed your washing powder, or your skin just isn’t getting on with a certain material.
  • Medical issues – Although dry skin is fairly common, you should always ensure that you have no underlying dermatological conditions that could be causing this if it’s becoming a major problem. This could include Eczema, Psoriasis or Dermatitis. Your local pharmacy, drop in clinic or GP can help if you have concerns. It is also worth noting, that some medications can cause dry skin as part of side effects so you should always read the patient information leaflet.

The appearance of dry skin is often dull and may have dry patches/red areas, sometimes feeling itchy and sensitive. You should drink lots of water throughout the day which is naturally good for your skin and keeping you hydrated, and I would suggest trying to avoid products that are perfumed or at least testing them out first as this can dry the skin out further. A creamier, milder cleanser and toner for the face may be better suited as well as moisturising regularly.

Oily Skin

Some people think that eating greasy foods will cause oily skin. I wasn’t able to find any evidence to suggest this, however some people may have allergies or sensitivity to some foods. Oil is produced naturally by hormones in the body. Androgens are usually responsible for this. Most oily skin is found to be hereditary, so regardless of a change in diet, the chances are you are stuck with this. As I have said previously though, your skin may change as you get older.

Naturally, oily skin can be increased at certain times of the month and during puberty due to this hormone, and changes within he body.

There are also some medications that could increase this such as the oral contraceptive and steroids which may cause acne and oily skin.

Skin usually has a greasy texture and appears shiny. There may be a proneness for acne and larger pores. Often the use of face masks can help with this, as well as choosing products for oilier skin. Choosing the right product works wonders and it may be that your skin becomes oilier at certain periods of the month or during a hormone change so you may want to develop a different skin routine to help during this time. As well as choosing the right moisturisers that are maybe lighter and less greasy/thick, you may want to think about choosing powder based foundations rather than liquid ones.

Sensitive Skin

People with normal, dry or oily skin can also have sensitive skin. The reasons for this could be one of many.

Some people may have allergies or a tendency for skin reactions, or it could be damaged due to very dry skin or cold/sun damage. Some people who believe they have sensitive skin may report stinging, tightness, or redness/rashes to certain products.

Dermatologists can be consulted to look into this further if you believe there is a significant problem, you should think about products that you use on your skin to avoid reactions. Although I would advocate this is the case with any skin type, milder products should be used avoiding harsh chemicals, alcohol, artificial ingredients and strong fragrances.

If you are sensitive to products, look for those with minimal ingredients and perform a skin test. Apply a small amount behind the ear overnight for approximately a week, if there has been no irritation then apply this to a small area on the face. If there is no reaction, then this should be OK for you to use but obviously you need a little common sense, if it begins to irritate during use, discontinue.

Other things you can do to help sensitive skin, is protecting yourself in the sun, wearing sun screen and covering up. Yes I know that some people like to have a tan, but personally I much prefer the factor 50 goth look which seems to compliment my red hair! As above, avoid steaming prolonged showers and baths and be considerate when you turn the heating up!!

Normal Skin

Well, good for you if you fall into this category! You probably have moist, balanced skin that works well with most products. Do not be fooled though, you should still be incorporating a good cleansing and moisturising routine despite your perfect production of oil and moisture!!

Find a good day and night cream that works well and ensure you moisturise the rest of your skin after showering. Obviously the advice about showering, sun and radiators still applies!

Combination Skin

This typically covers two different types of skin such as dry skin with an oily T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin) You should read above as to some of the causes and the why’s of various skin types, but when selecting products, you may find those specifically designed for combination skins work well. Cleansing and moisturising should help overall. It may be that your skin changes frequently due to this, so sometimes you may need dry skin products and others you may need oily skin products. It is important to assess this and change when it’s appropriate depending on what you feel suits you best.

As with anything, if you are in doubt you should always ask advise from professionals. Read labels of products and test a small amount before applying anything liberally to avoid reactions. Some places, for example The Body Shop, will often allow you to take a tester of a product to try out before buying this outright.

Winter

Well it’s nearly that time of year – unpredictable weather, cold, wet, miserable, dark and shorter days. I’m not much of a fan of this time of year and neither is my skin and hair.

You have the people that will shower more to stay warm, those that will shower less to avoid the cold when getting out and those it won’t affect at all. As a general rule, I wouldn’t really have a full on shower any more than three times a week, unless I am at a festival – in which case this is a daily event. This isn’t because I am dirty, or have a phobia about keeping clean, the simple fact of the matter is that my skin really doesn’t tolerate steamy hot showers on a daily basis well. My main priority at any time of the year is moisturising. I can’t get enough of it! Day and Night, before work and near bed time comes my vigorous cream regime!

Alas, I hope this slightly condensed guide to skin types has given you some insight into choosing your next products!

August 2013 Glossybox

August 13, 2013

As well as free things, I also came back to Augusts Glossybox upon the return from Bloodstock. It certainly turned a very glum Pants into a very excitable and distracted one! There is something about this box that makes me feel as though it’s Christmas again. Even though everyone else gets the same packaging, it makes me feel as though this was packaged and wrapped just for me.

So enough with the jabbering and on with the contents you say? Well alright then:

augglossyboxaugglossybox2augglossybox3This month brought me the following:

  • Oceane makeup remover pen (with extra tips)
  • Jelly Pong Pong 2-in-1 shadow liner (I had the grey/green like colour)
  • TRESemme Concentrated rinse off treatment (perfect for post festival hair disasters)
  • Emite Eyelash Curler (I’ve been thinking about buying some curlers for a while now)
  • Olay regenerist 3 point treatment cream (can never have enough cream to help with fine lines and sagging right?)

Needless to say, I am more than excited at trying the Jelly Pong Pong after I fell in love with their fairy lashes mascara. Now I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of other beauty boxes to satisfy my addiction for new products and kill the inevitable festival blues.

Totally hellbent for post festival cheer ups

Free product joys

August 13, 2013

It’s always sad when festival season finishes, however it is made slightly better when you come back to parcels that contain free things!!!

On my return from Wacken, I received my two free products after signing up to Birchbox:

wenloccitaneWen Cleansing Conditioner, which I confess I used during my first shower back at home and it felt amazing! I was also filled with joy at receiving another L’Occitane moisturiser. I already have one of these from a Glossybox a few months ago and have been using it sparingly so I am pleased this has now been replenished.

To make things even better, upon returning from Bloodstock yesterday, I received this through the letterbox:

maybmascaraA free Maybelline “The Rocket Volum’ Express” mascara. This was from a competition I had entered and clearly forgotten about. I have resisted opening it to test it out for now so I am sure this won’t be the last you will be seeing of this!

Totally hellbent for bonus postal goodies

Latest in Beauty – Little Beauty Box

July 18, 2013

LIB little beauty box

I love my beauty boxes, but sometimes waiting a whole month for the next one can be so tedious! Latest in Beauty offer two different types of box that offer some much needed “ooooh a shiny box” in between Glossybox and Birchbox deliveries.

Firstly are their LIB collections, themed sets of pre-determined products where you can see exactly what you are going to get before ordering. The collections are usually somewhere between £7-£20 depending on the nature of the theme, but often sell out very quickly! Amie got her hands on the Glamour Beauty Edit which you can read about here.

Second is the package than popped through my letterbox this morning, the Little Beauty Box.

LIB box

The Little Beauty Box consists of three small samples, and as with the LIB collections you get to see what you will receive in advance, in fact you get to pick which products you want before committing to the box. There is no recurring subscription as payment is taken via a premium text message for £1.50.

Here’s what I chose.

Liz earle LIB box

Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate

With an ingredient list that is almost entirely natural essential oils I had to give this a shot. The concentrate is a aromatic oil intended for use as part of the evening skincare routine, and proclaims to clear toxins, reduce puffiness, boost circulation, encourage cell renewal and aid lymphatic drainage.

It smells gorgeous and is a generous 2ml vial of sample, so enough for a few nights at least.

Lavera LIB box

Lavera Liposome Intensive Cream

Again, it was the organic, natural ingredients that drew me towards picking a wrinkle cream that I don’t really need. I received three 1ml sachets, yet somehow they aren’t nearly as exciting as the lovely packaging from Liz Earle.

Curiosity made me open one straight away and the rose scent is just gorgeous, it did feel a little too greasy for my skin, however I will be donating these to Amie’s somewhat dryer skin where I think they will find a happier home!

Aveda LIB box

Aveda Invati Exfoliating Shampoo & Thickening Conditioner

You can opt for one of your samples to be a surprise, and with nothing in the third option making me particularly excited that’s what I went for.

These cute little 10ml tubes smell absolutely amazing, and if my hair takes a liking to them I just might have to go for a full sized based on that alone!

You can order a LIB little beauty box here for £1.50.

Totally hellbent for smelling like a herb garden thanks to my organic picks!
