Sally Hansen Sugar Coat in Lick-O-Rich, Razzleberry and Cherry Drop

March 31, 2014
Sally Hansen Sugar Coat Lick-O-Rich, Razzleberry and Cherry Drop

Sally Hansen Sugar Coat Lick-O-Rich, Razzleberry and Cherry Drop

As soon as I opened this trio of gorgeous polishes on my birthday I knew it was love at first sight! I’m a big fan of the textured nail look but there aren’t too many of them about that are this easy to use and wear.

There are eight colours in the range but these are definitely the three that I’m likely to get the most wear out of.  First up I love the bottle shape and the decal on the front has a texture that mirrors the polish itself which is a nice touch! It’s hard to pick a favourite of the three as they all applied evenly in two coats with amazing colour pay-off.

The matte textured finish looks quite rubbery but it feels sandy to the touch. Isn’t nearly as annoying as I thought it would be and thankfully it doesn’t snag on hair or clothes which I find a rarity in anything with a raised finish.

Sally Hansen Sugar Coat in Lick-O-Rich, Razzleberry and Cherry Drop

The only real downside to their polishes is the longevity, all three colours lasted only a day or two before they chipped even with top coat. Removing them wasn’t nearly as tough as I imagined, I thought I’d have to scrub away or soak them but actually they all came off with minimum effort – a tad tougher than normal polish but much easier than glitter!Sally Hansen Sugar Coat in Lick-O-Rich, Razzleberry and Cherry Drop

Overall I am really impressed and the biggest bonus at the moment is that I’ve seen them floating around in a few poundlands!

If you’re after them online you can find them at Boots.com for £6.99 each.

Totally hellbent for a unique finish in my three favourite colours for nails

Sleek Blush by 3 in Lace Review

March 29, 2014

sleek-thumbnail

I’d been eyeing up the Sleek Blush by 3 Palettes for quite a while before I finally gave in and chose “Lace” on a recent Gem and Pants shopping trip. Out of all the colours I figures this would be the one I would get the most wear out of.

sleek-palette-front

One of my favourite things about the Sleek range is their packaging. It’s so … well … sleek I suppose! It has a real luxurious feel to it and reminds me of NARS with it’s matte black casing but without the hefty price tag. On opening the palette, you are greeted with three stunning bold blushes.

sleek-palette-open

Lace is a trio of matte and shimmer pink/peach shades that are absolutely gorgeous. As always, I’ve resisted using it until I’d taken my pictures and how I managed to keep my hands off it for that long I don’t know. These three shades are perfect for me and I’m looking forward to being able to pick between three different blushers (instead of just one shade that I have to pick and chuck into my make-up bag) when I take this out and about on tour and for gigs. I’m definitely going to pack this for my upcoming trip to Scotland!

Onto the swatch:

sleek-palette-swatch

These were stunning to swatch. They feel so soft and silky and literally glide on. I love the coral/peach colour on the far right which along with the first shade is a Matte colour. The middle has a beautiful shimmer to it and will be perfect for a more glamorous night out.

There are eight shades of the Blush by 3 range at the moment – some of them are quite daring colours for blusher but I definitely want to get my hands on a few more – especially “flame“, “pumpkin” and “California I.A“.

I’m am most certainly overwhelmed by how beautiful this palette is and think it’s money well spent. For £9.99 you can pick up one of the many shades directly from the Sleek website here.

Have you tried out any of the Sleek Blush by 3 palettes? If so I’d love to know your thoughts.

Totally hellbent for silky soft corals – all over my cheeks!

Make-up Palette Storage

March 24, 2014

palette-rack

After Gem and I had finished one of our Gym classes last week, we decided in our infinite wisdom that we would “pop into” the local shopping centre to purchase some new Gym wear and obligatory red and blue yoga mats. Unfortunately, this meant we were unsupervised and within reach of a variety of shops where we could easily spend all our pennies. We do have a habit of going a bit crazy when we are both together, but it does mean between the two of us, we manage to find some ultimate bargains. One of many last week was this adorable little toast rack which Gem spotted in B&M a cheap and cheerful “full of everything” shop on the local high street.

Although this isn’t much use to me as an actual toast rack – it is the absolute perfect size for storing all of my palettes!

palette-rack-fullJPG

I love having things on show on my dressing table – but I like this to be in an organised manner so that when I am getting ready, I have everything to hand. This is probably one of the most adorable things I have on there and for a bargain price of £1.99 it was more than justifiable considering you can spend at least £20-£30 and more on acrylic make-up storage – so next time you are in your local “odds and sods” shop – take another look at some of their bargain items and see how you could use it for other means!

Have you picked up any weird and wonderful items recently that you’ve used for storing your make-up?

Totally hellbent for shopping with my bestest Gemma

Glossybox March 2014 Review

Glossybox is usually my favourite subscription box, and after seeing the sneak preview product I was sure this would be a great one. As it is I’m torn on my feelings for what could have been a great box but unfortunately turned into a bit of a let down.

There are five products this month (three full size) and I got a bonus as I’ve been a subscriber for one year now.

Mitchell and Peach Body Cream

Mitchell and Peach Body Cream

I wasn’t at all excited when I first saw this body cream but actually the smell won me over in an instant! It’s so deliciously natural smelling with a whole host of  organic oils and extracts including lavender, rose, vanilla, sweet violet, coconut along with English honey and shea butter. Free of parabens, SLS and synthetic colouring this is a really lovely addition to the box.

40ml Sample

£36 for 180ml from MitchellandPeach.com

Sleek Pout Polish in Chocolate Kiss

Sleek pout polish in Chocolate Kiss

Sleek Pout Polish in Chocolate Kiss

I was so excited about this when I saw it in the sneak peek but WHY did it have to be in the most disgusting poo-brown colour ever. Am I the only one who thinks brown lipstick the most dated and awful thing? I love that it has SPF15 and I’m a big fan of pretty much everything Sleek make but I don’t think I’ll ever find any use or wear in this colour unfortunately.

Full Size

£4.49 from Sleekmakeup.com

Bellapierre Cosmetics Shimmer Powder in SP002 TwilightIMG_8553

Bellapierre Cosmetics Shimmer Powder in SP002 Twilight

Another product that could have been amazing and unfortunately just happens to be in a colour I really don’t think I will use. Amie got a gorgeous dreamy dark blue shimmer in hers (which I am totally 100% jealous of!) but I got this sandy gold. Though it’s pretty enough I just can’t see myself getting much wear out of this shade. I do however like that it is 100% pure mica.

Full Size

£12.99 from Bellapierre.co.uk

Vita Liberata pHenomonal 2-3 Week Tan Lotion

Vita Liberata pHenomonal 2-3 Week Tan Lotion

Nope. Do not want. Not only are these tiny samples but I have never ever in my life used fake tan, nor do I intend to! I fully enjoy being as pale as possible all year round and really cannot ever imagine a time where I would want to even test this out for lulz.

2 x 3ml Samples

£37.50 for 150ml from Vitaliberata.com

Dove Hair Therapy Intensive Repair 60 Second Treatment Shot

Dove Hair Therapy Intensive Repair 60 Second Treatment Shot

I love the idea of these bonus little treatments but there never seems to be quite enough for my long thick hair! Still it’s enough to give it a try, especially at it advises you to use it only on the ends of your hair.

Full Size

£1.49 from Superdrug.com

Green and Black's Organic Milk Chocolate

Green and Black’s Organic Milk Chocolate

Finally I received a tiny chocolate bar as a thank you for subscribing over a year ago, which was a lovely surprise!

So overall not an amazing box for me (though it could have been with different shades in the two full size make-up products!) but not a completely terrible one either.

If you want a Glossybox of your very own you can order one here for £10 (+ P&P)

Totally hellbent for almost getting it right

Skincare

Back to Basics – Simple Skincare

March 19, 2014
Simple Skincare - face scrub, face wipes, light moisturiser

Simple Skincare - face scrub, face wipes, light moisturiser

Long before I became a beauty blogger with a mountain of skincare products that threatens to topple and kill me any minute I only used one brand and that was Simple.

Today I picked a few products up on a whim (as they were an amazingly cheap 3 for £5!) to see if they still live up to my memories now that I’ve been tainted with the world of high end skincare, and I have to say I feel cheated, they are every bit as amazing as I remember!

There are lots of things I like about Simple as a brand, they are completely vegan and contain no artificial perfume, colour or harsh chemicals making them great for all skin types, but especially those with sensitive skin or allergies.

Simple Skincare

Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Wipes Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Wipes

I haven’t used face-wipes for ages (with the exception of festival season where they are an -essential-) but I’ll admit that there are times where I wish I had a wipe at hand when I’m just too tired to go through the rigmarole of a five step skincare routine before bed. You get 25 wipes in a pack and they are much thicker and softer than any other wipes I have tried. They contain no alcohol or oil and are enriched with pro-vitamin B5 and Vitamin E.

Depending on how much make-up I have on I can usually get the whole lot off with only one wipe. Stage make-up takes two but do then it is primed and prepped to last up to running around a sweaty stage!

Simple Kind To Skin Smoothing Facial Scrub

Simple Kind To Skin Smoothing Facial Scrub

We all love a good exfoliate, right? I certainly do, I have greasy skin prone to breakouts and blackheads and sometimes only a deep scrub will do the job! After only one use I can see why I used to love this scrub so much. It has fine rice granules that feel quite chunky in comparison to the microdermabrasion scrubs I’ve favoured of late, yet they work just as well. One use left my skin looking clearer and fresher without drying out at all.

Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser

Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser

This was the first moisturiser I purchased way back in my teens when dinosaurs roamed the earth.  As with the face wipes it is enriched with Pro-Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E, and is equally friendly on sensitive skin. It’s a very light moisturiser and absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a greasy or oily feel.

I do think you can feel a price-difference with moisturisers and though this does do the job it doesn’t quite leave the same silky feeling as my beloved L’Occitane Angelica Hydration Cream (but really with a £27 price difference you can’t complain!) it more than suffices for a general purpose day to day moisturiser.

My only serious qualm with this is that it doesn’t contain any SPF, but as my foundation does (plus the fact I don’t take my pale goth skin anywhere near sunshine without dedicated factor 50) I can get by.

I’ve completely re-sparked my love for Simple as a brand and will definitely be picking up a few old favourites (and some new products I’ve not yet tried!) soon.

At the moment Simple are 3 for £5 from Sainsburys, but you can always find them on special offer at Boots and Superdrug.

Have you tried Simple skincare, what are your favourites from the range?

Totally hellbent for a trip down skincare memory lane

MUA Mascara shade 3 Review

March 17, 2014
MUA Mascara Shade 3 Blue

MUA Mascara Shade 3 Blue

MUA Mascara Shade 3 Blue

You know how it is when you’re casually browsing the MUA stand and you just can’t help picking up a few bits and pieces even though you promised yourself you wouldn’t? Yeah well, that totally happened to me (oops!) and I ended up with a couple of things, this fabulous shade of mascara being one of them!

The tube is opaque plastic and not as I thought clear showing the colour inside. The mascara itself is less greeney/turquoise hued and more blue than the tube, but we’re only talking marginally so it’s not really a massive deal.

The wand is pretty standard with fairly short even bristles, it’s not the best by a long shot but it isn’t completely terrible either.

MUA Mascara Shade 3 Blue

The formula isn’t really anything special either, it wasn’t particularly curling or thickening, however you do have to take into consideration that this is a £1 mascara!

So-so brush and lacklustre formula aside though I actually do really like this mascara. The colour is gorgeous and currently a pretty close match to my hair. It takes a few layers to build up, and you have to be fast because it clumps quite easily, but if you get it right you’re left with a very bold and bright look.

MUA Blue Mascara Shade 3

I won’t be reaching for this on a day to day basis but I’ll definitely bust it out when I fancy a little pop of colour!

Available for £1 from Superdrug.com

Totally hellbent for all things turquoise!

Beauty Boxes

Love me Beauty March Edition 2 Review

March 17, 2014

love-me-beauty-march

Gem and I finally broke and both ordered one this months Love me Beauty box. Okay, admittedly I blame Gemma entirely – since she ordered hers first which made it impossible for me to resist.

For those that may not know, Love me Beauty is a beauty box similar to Birchbox and Glossybox, but with a twist. Each month you get to see in advance what will be in the box, and you can choose from 2-3 “menus”. Each one has 2-3 staple products with the others being unique and a little different, giving you the option to choose the box you like best.

My first box, was edition 2. Even though I knew exactly what was coming, I was still really excited to receive this bundle of joy in the post this morning.

lmb-inner

The packaging – although nothing too fancy, was perfect. There was no inner box, so on opening the outer cardboard one, you are greeted with a perfectly placed card telling you all about the contents of the box. Underneath that, wrapped delicately in shredded and tissue paper lay the contents of the box.

Whoever packed this – deserves a medal! This is -the- best packed box I’ve ever seen and everything was so beautifully placed and packed I have no idea how it survived in transit.

Enough lusting over the packaging details and onto the products:

lmb-murad

Murad – Pore and Line Minimising Hydrator – 10ml sample – £49.50 for 50ml

This claims to reduce the appearance of pores and repairs skin breakouts to reeal a more even skin tone. Recently, my skin has been very dry which has resulted in some industrial strength moisturiser from the Docs. Unfortunately this is quite thick and greasy, which has left me open (and my skin seemingly) to pores – something I’ve never really suffered with. Usually this would be thrown Gem’s way but not this time. After sampling some, it doesn’t feel too heavy on my skin which is nice and almost has a somewhat clinical smell to it. It was quite pleasant to apply so we shall see whether this proves to be useful after a few weeks of using it. At nearly £50 for the full size though, I’m not sure I’ll be splashing out on this any time soon.

lmb-blanx

BlanX – White Shock Toothpase – 15ml sample – £7.50 for 50ml

Brains and I saw the TV advert for this the other week, and for some reason it really tickles Brains. Allegedly, this toothpaste reacts to light and the more it’s exposed the more chance your teeth have of becoming whiter. I’m really intrigued to see the results of this – having seen it advertised I presumed this would be another fad that cost £20-30 a tube, but I’m quite impressed by the price tag for the full size version. Now I’m spending a little more time out in the garden, I’ll be putting this to the test. It seems to smell and look like regular toothpaste which is also a bonus.

Heres the advert for a little chuckle:

lmb-nip-fab

Nip+Fab – Post Workout Fix – Full size sample – £9.95 for 50ml

This is the largely the product that made me pick this box. I love Nip+Fab and am a huge fan of their Dry Leg fix which worked a treat. Only the other week Gem and I had a heavy gym session, which rendered us unable to walk down stairs or get back up from the loo due to significant muscle aching. I’m really looking forward to giving this a go after next weeks Gym sessions to see how it fares. The great thing about this – is that it’s almost like a roll on deodorant, so you just roll it straight onto the desired area. Easy peasy, which means you don’t have to slap on more cream resulting in slippy greasy hands. It smells like a combination of Mouthwash and BIO freeze, so I imagine the notion is quite similar to other muscle gels.

lmb-deepsteep

Deep Steep – Moisture Stick in “Honeydew Spearmint” – Full size sample – £3.60 for 15ml

I was expecting a lip balm sized stick when I saw this on ordering, but actually its much bigger. This is supposed to hydrate even the driest of skin, so it should work in perfect harmony with mine. It recommends trying it on cracked hands, lips, cuticles, heels or elbows so looks like it’s fairly multi purpose – I also noticed when checking the ingredients that there was a little note saying “we do not test on animals” which also bumped up the brownie points. This is a little like a glue stick, but when rubbing the stick onto your fingers or desired area, a little bit of the product melts gloriously onto your skin and it feels so soft and silky. I’ve tried a little on my face and it seems to be faring well. I reckon this is going to be a great addition to my festival packing and at only £3.60, it’s probably worth dropping into my hand bag for when I’m out and about. Full on impressed!

lmg-q-english

Quintessentially English – Bath Salts in “SummerSolstice” – 50g sample – £4.25 for 100g

I absolutely loath baths – but I do -love- bath salts, and like to use them to fill up my make-up brush containers. Not only do they give off a lovely smell, they keep the ends of my brushes smelling fresh too. I was expecting this to be a little bigger, but it’s not big deal. I have to say, the smell of these are just amazing. It’s infused with lemongrass, so you get that lovely lemony smell that’s not too overpowering. It almost makes me want to sit in the bath just to use it. I’m sure I will find a pot to give these little delights a home to!

lmb-vintage-cos-company

The Vintage Cosmetic Company – False Lashes in “Gracie” – Full size – £6

One of my fav bloggers reviewed these the other day and they looked so adorable. I never used to be into falsies, but ever since I started receiving them in my beauty boxes I’ve been brave enough to try them out and they really aren’t that bad to apply. These look super classy and I’ve really enjoyed a lot of the other things I’ve tried from The Vintage Cosmetic Company. Definitely going to be wearing these on my next evening out.

I’m really happy with this box and I know, with four boxes now I’m going to have to choose one of them to go! I’m going to see what next month has in store for Love me Beauty. If you’d like to get your hands on one of their boxes, head on over to their website here for just £10 plus £2.95 P&P.

March already? Phew where did winter go? Who cares, the sun is shining and my Birchbox arrived this morning!

This month’s box is a collaboration with Lulu Guinness and comes in the usual Birchbox bag-within-a-box with a chic black and white candy stripe outer card.

Featuring five products and a “lifestyle extra” it’s pretty standard fare for Birchbox and there’s a great mix of all sorts inside!

Benefit Stay Don’t Stray

Just as my trusty ELF eye primer starts to run out this gem appears in a box! I’m a lover of all things Benefit so this is a real treat, I’ve tried it out before and was really impressed so this will definitely get put to use.  Also included is a voucher for a free “Make-upper” at any Benefit counter!

Birchbox March 2014 Review DR. Brandt Pores no more pore refiner

Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner

I suffer with ridiculously large pores and greasy skin so am always happy to try out anything to combat that. This feels a lot like The POREfessional from Benefit (one of my absolute essentials) but with the full size at almost twice the price it needs to deliver twice the results and really there seems to be little difference at all. Still it’s definitely going to get some wear!

Birchbox March 2014 Review Aroma Works nurture body oil

Aroma Works Nurture Body Oil

This body oil smells divine with a mix of 100% natural may chang, roman chamomile & sandalwood oils. Even though it’s a tiny bottle a little goes a long way and I can definitely see myself falling for this product. A small drop on the back of my hand covered my whole arm and left me smelling of lovely sweet oil all day.

 Cellu-Cup

I frowned in confusion when I first saw this inside it’s mini bag thinking it was a moon cup, but I’m glad to say it’s actually a massage tool for getting rid of cellulite! A really unique and fun addition to a beauty box I will definitely try this out! Rather than try and explain how it works just check out the video link from the Cellu-Cup website if you’re interested!

English Laundry No. 7 For Her

Perfume sample. Scoff.

No actually this is really nice and you get enough of a sample to actually wear it a few times. With top notes of pear and jasmine blended with gardenia, vanilla and sandlewood this is right up my fragrance street. If you’re a fan of sweet feminine perfumes this is pretty dreamy and it does come in a tiny atomizer so is great for just popping in the handbag. We all always complain about fragrance samples but actually when you find one you really like that you wouldn’t normally try it’s great! Definitely going to consider a full size!

2ml Sample

£47.00 for 50ml from Birchbox.co.uk

Lulu Guinness Candy Rock

Finally this month’s lifestyle extra is a stick of stripy candy rock, which is apparently the inspiration for the Lulu Guiness spring/summer 2014 collection! Yum! Also included is a code for £20 off a £100 spend at any Lulu Guinness store or online.

So all in all a pretty amazing box for me, and one with a pretty high product value! Even though there is only one full size item, it’s cost is £3ish more than the price you pay for the whole box. I wasn’t too fussed about the Lulu Guinness theme but the addition of Benefit definitely scored a few extra brownie points for me so thanks Lulu!

If you want a Birchbox of your very own you can order one here for £10 (& £2.95 p&p)

Totally hellbent for the sweet relief of “OH! It’s not a mooncup! Hurrah!”
