Birchbox May 2014 Review

May 13, 2014

birchbox-may-14

It seems Birchbox have stuck with their minimal packaging and have now taken to a smaller cardboard package in favor of their previous outer box. This is somewhat of a shame, since I reused mine for storing lots of different bits and bobs, but this month has made up for it, because the Birchbox itself is absolutely gorgeous, they have teamed up with Harper’s Bazaar and packed it full of lovely items.

birchbox-may-14-benefit

Benefit – They’re Real! Mascara – 3g sample – £19.50 for full size

I admit I already knew this was on it’s way, because I spoilt the box for myself when I was catching up on my Lazy Days Beauty posts during flu recovery! You can check out her post here. I already own a full size They’re Real as well as another mini, which I usually take to gigs with me, so I’m pretty ecstatic about having another back up mini to stash in my overflowing makeup drawers, now I don’t have to be so thrifty with my current ones! For those that haven’t tried this yet, I suggest you do. It’s absolutely wonderful, with minimal clumping and accentuated lashes and I often reach for this during the days I can’t be bothered with a full face of makeup.

birchbox-may-14-soigne

Soigné – Nail Lacquer in”Crème au Beurre” – Full size product – £11 for full size

My first thoughts on pulling this out of the box, was how beautifully packaged it was. Not that this was neccesary for a varnish, because the boxes tend to go in the bin once the pot joins it’s brothers in arms on the dreaded overfilled nail varnish shelf of destiny. None the less, ten out of ten for effort. It gives it a very luxurious feel to it, as does the colour which is a slightly shimmer pink-nude shade. It definitely harnesses a Parisian feel to it. Application wise, it took three coats, but actually I really like the colour and think it will pair perfectly with black. I’m full on into nude shades and black at the moment and have been for quite a while. A full size Varnish too which is always a bonus along with the promise of being non-toxic and made with up to 85% of natural origins, I’m excited to see more from this brand.

bircbox-may-14-aromatherapy

Aromatherapy Associates – Revive Morning Bath & Shower Oil – 3ml sample – £39 for full size

I own a few bits from Aromatherapy Associates, but nothing I’ve had has really stood out of wowed me. This is another oil to add to my increasing collection, but this one has a little twist. It can be added to the bath or smoothed over the body before showering. Yes, that’s right, before showering! Now I really like body oil and I also use this when I somehow bribe the other half into giving me a nice back rub, but one thing I have never done, is oiled up and then showered. It seems a little backwards to me. Kind of like brushing your teeth before bed and then eating a chocolate cake or moisturising your face before having a wash. Having said that, I’m open to suggestion so perhaps will give this a try. It smells lovely and I may even squeeze 3 or 4 uses out of the 3ml sample. As for repurchasing, it’s going to have to work miracles in order for me to spend £39 on something that essentially goes “straight down the drain”

birchbox-may-14-beauty-protect

Beauty Protector – Protect & Shampoo, Protect & Condition -two  samples – £14 each for full size

I have a weakness for miniatures, and these are just the cutest. Granted buying miniature products isn’t the most cost effective way of me staying clean, especially since my hair is so long it usually takes 2 bottle of Conditioner, but still I’m pleased these came as a pair. The best thing about these is they are advertised as sulfate-free, as well as being Vegan, having UV protection and colour safe. Hopefully this should be perfectly safe to use on my incredibly bright, yet prone to fading pillarbox red locks.  Depending on how I get on with these, I may even be prepared to empty my wallet and purchase some full size bottles. I was my hair once a week and rarely use Shampoo to preserve my colour, so spending a little extra on Shampoo and Conditioner is acceptable when it lasts so long!

birchbox-may-14-liz-earle

birchbox-may-14-lizearle-polish

Liz Earle – Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser – 30ml sample – £13.25 for full size

I’ve seen a few people raving about this before, so when I discovered people receiving this in their box this month, I was definitely a little excited. A relatively decent sized 30ml sample compared to some facial cleansers I’ve received, and it comes with a muslin cloth. Apparantly this is suitable for all skin types, and leaves the skin feeling beautiful when used daily. The Liz Earle website have also released a video here with some more info. Although the only difference with my morning face routine here is that I will be switching my trust flannel for some muslin cloth and slightly more expensive facial cleanser, I’m looking forward to giving it a go and seeing whether this could be part of my 2014 skincare regime. (I know I know, we are almost 6 months into the year already!)

Yet again, Birchbox have delivered a spectacular box and leaves me ever hungry for the next. (One day Gem and I will end up in rehab) If you want to try your hand at Birchbox, you can get hold of yours for £10.00 a month plus £2.95 P&P here.

Totally hellbent for all the best brands, crammed into one brilliant box

Love Me Beauty Box Review April 2014 – Menu 1

April 22, 2014
Love me beauty april 2014 contents

Love me beauty april 2014 contents

It’s the 22nd and my April Love Me Beauty box has only just arrived!

Unlike other beauty boxes Love Me Beauty allows you to pick from three menus, so you know exactly what you will get in each monthly box. This month I picked menu 1, and here’s what I received!

Love me Beauty April

Betty Hula Secret Wonder Oil Roller Ball

There’s been loads of oils in recent beauty boxes, and I was a sceptic at first but I’ve quickly fallen in love with the natural herb-y scents and amazing results! This reminds me of the Balance Me Radiance Facial Oil only for your body instead. I love the vintage design on the packaging and can definitely see me buying another once I’ve worked through this one!

Models Own Nail Polish in Coral Reef

I’m a big fan of the Models Own polishes and love a good bright coral shade so this was a perfect product for me! The bright pinky red went straight on my nails and gave such amazing coverage I only had to use one coat!

Neal & Wolf Silk Smoothing Blow-Dry Balm

I’m pretty lazy with my hair as unless I’m in a hurry I just leave it to dry naturally. On the occasions I do use a hair dryer I find that I get lots of flyaway and frizz so this will be great to try out! It claims to provide moisture, balance and manageability and leave hair sleek straight and silky-smooth so I’ve got high hopes! It’s definitely worth mentioning that the smell is absolutely divine too!

Redken Colour Extend Conditioner

Considering I’ve had blue hair for about six years now, I’m always looking for ways to fight against fading colour and thus save me the hassle of a six hour hair dying session for a little longer! I’ve tried various conditioners for coloured hair over the years but none have really taken my fancy, I’m always willing to try one more though! There’s only enough for one use on my long thick hair, but if you have shorted hair I think you could get a few washes out of this.

Hello Fresh Gift Voucher

This card wasn’t advertised as being part of the box so I was quite surprised to find it, however having peeked around a few other blogs it seems that everyone received one this month regardless of which menu they chose. It’s worth £25 but the cheapest thing you can purchase is £39. Definitely a perk if you use this service or are interested to try it, but not something I think I will use.

www.HelloFresh.co.uk

Overall I think it was a pretty good box with three full sized items. Nothing I’m ga-ga crazy about but nothing I dislike either (other than the voucher which I wasn’t expecting anyway).

If you want to try a Love Me Beauty box of your own you can order them from Lovemebeauty.com for £10 + P&P!

Totally hellbent for so many full size products!

Glossybox April 2014

April 15, 2014

glossybox-april-14-contents

Gem actually received her Glossybox yesterday, but mine ended up at the post office instead since I’d spent the morning at the gym and there was no one to open the door to the postman. On collecting it today though, I’m pretty pleased with the contents – even if I did sneak a peek at Gem’s yesterday.

Whats in the box?

glossybox-april-14-emite

Emite Make Up – Lip Brush – L312 (£17)

I’ve been thinking of buying a high end lip brush for a little while now so this has come at just the right time! The brush is also synthetic which means it’s safe for Gem and I to use. It’s slanted and a good size as well which will make application much easier than some of the smaller lip brushes I’ve used in the past. Well done to Glossybox for bring this one out of the bag (or should I say box?)

Visit the emite website

glossybox-april-14-monuspa

MONU Spa – Warming Ginger Massage & Body Oil – 30ml sample (£25 for 100ml)

I love receiving massage and body oil samples, not only can I convince the other half into giving me a lovely back rub, it’s also a step up from your “Ann Summers Love Oil” so it’s great for your skin! This oil smells absolutely gorgeous and I’m a big fan of ginger at the moment. If this is anything like their other products, I’m sure I’ll be hooked.

Visit the MONU website

glossybox-april-14-mememe

MeMeMe Cosmetics – Beat the blues Pearl Pink – Full size product receied (£5.50 for 12ml)

This looks similar to Benefit’s High Beam which is a huge essential in my everyday (and not so everyday) make-up regime. In terms of application, it looks quite nice with a subtle highlight, whereas the Benefit High Beam has more of a shimmer. I quite like the end result of this for a more toned down look, the only thing I don’t like is the brush applicator it comes with – it’s quite hard and I can imagine using it on my face will irritate me a little. Not to worry though, that’s what fingers are for right? I’m definitely going to get some use out of this, especially since it will prolong the longevity of my Benefit High Beam!

Vist the MeMeMe website

glossybox-april-14-tresemme

TRESemmé – Instant Refresh Cleansing Dry Shampoo – 100ml sample (£4.99 for 200ml)

I do enjoy a good dry Shampoo – since I try to avoid washing my hair more than once a week to keep my colour for longer, I’m often reaching for one of these to refresh my locks mid-wash. I’ve not tried the TRESemmé one before so this is a welcome treat. It smells quite fruity and applies like most dry shampoos. It seems a little pricey at £4.99 for the full 200ml can, but time will tell whether I like this enough to buy it over my current cheaper Superdrug own brand or Batiste.

Visit the TRESemmé website

glossybox-april-14-sun-sense

SunSense UK – Daily Face SPF 50+ – 10g sample (£20.99 for 75g)

Gem was incredible annoyed when she found out I got this in my box. She ended up with some awful tanning product which I was also expecting, but was pleasantly surprised when I received this treat. It’s slightly tinted and has SPF 50+ which is perfect! Gem and I are always on the look out for face products with a high SPF and I know this is going to be just perfect for festival season. Unfortunately the tube has one of those annoying “tabs” instead of an actual cap, so I haven’t opened it, but come the festival season, I’ll be decanting this into one of my many many empties and hoping it helps me avoid the usually inevitable “dreaded-orange-face” over the summer – as well as protecting me from the Sun of course. If it passes the test of the holy Wacken lands at it’s hottest, I’ll definitely be purchasing some more.

Extra Treat!

Like Gemma, it seems I too have been subscribing to Glossybox for over a year, I received this cute Green & Blacks Dark Chocolate as a thank you. I’m no stranger to these mini chocolate bars since Birchbox often dish them out and I think they are most splendid! Just enough chocolate to satisfy your taste buds with minimal feelings of guilt – perfect.

If you want to get your hands on a Glossybox, you can subscribe here for just for £10 (+ P&P) per month.

Birchbox April 2014 Contents

I’m sure the courier who delivers my beauty boxes thinks I’m absolutely mad because I squeal with delight every single time!

I have to say I’m really impressed with this month’s Birchbox on every factor except one – the new delivery box! The outer box was taped shut and I scored the box beneath in my excitement to find the treasure inside! I know it’s only a tiny thing but the usual boxes were just fine! Anyway, tiny side-issue nitpicking aside, this really is a great box, and though it has only one full size product (and one full size lifestyle extra) alongside four sample sizes, I’m really excited about every single product (and how often does that happen?!)

2014 April Birchbox- TheBalm Cosmetics - How 'Bout Them Apples Cheek & Lip Cream

TheBalm Cosmetics – How ‘Bout Them Apples Cheek & Lip Cream in Pie

I love these tiny TheBalm samples as they take up so little space in my make-up bag. This is a multitasking product that can be used both as a cream blush and a lip colour in a gorgeous pinky-red shade. If the quick play I had with this is anything to go by I will be rushing to get the full palette sometime soon! I’m usually more of a powder blush girl but this blended so smoothly into a subtle flush of colour that I could see myself being converted towards the way of the cream blusher!

April 2014 Birchbox RMK Make up base

RMK Make-up Base

When I first spotted this I thought it was another nail polish, but actually it is a make-up base. Not quite a primer (however it does promise to make your foundation last longer!) but a moisturising skin prep. It’s a very lightweight lotion with quite a thin consistency but a quick test on the back of the hand did leave my skin very soft and even. Perhaps something for those days when I’m in a hurry and just want something to throw my foundation on top of!

Birchbox April 2014 Colour Blum Gala's Gems Nail Polish In Breakfast at...

Colour Club Gala Gems Nail Polish in Breakfast At…

Birchbox sent an email a few weeks ago allowing subscribers to choose which colour of polish they would receive, which was a really nice touch and ensured that no-one got lumbered with a shade they would not wear. I picked this lovely metallic mint green and I’m happy to say it’s even prettier in person that I expected. I don’t really buy into the seasonal nail varnish trends but if you are the sort that does I think this would be great for a pretty spring shade. The swatch above is only one coat, though I’d likely go with two and a top cot on my nails for longevity!

Birchbox April 2014 Laura Mercier Souffle Body Butter

Laura Mercia Body Butter in  Creme Brule

A squeezable body butter? I wasn’t convinced at first (and it is really more of a thick lotion than a butter!) but actually this is very luxurious and left my skin feeling extremely soft. The scent isn’t something I’d pick out myself and it’s quite strong, however I don’t dislike it enough not to use the rest of this up based on how well it moisturises.

30g Sample

Full size £27 from Birchbox.co.uk

Birchbox April 2013 - Yin Yang Natural Moisturiser

 Yin Yang Natural Moisturiser

Made with a whole host of natural organic ingredients and a lovely wholesome scent, this moisturiser won me over right away. It’s got quite a citrus smell but not so overwhelming that you wouldn’t want to use it on your face. The consistency is quite light and I think this will make for a lovely day moisturiser (though unfortunately it has no SPF) however I won’t be using it myself as it says that it is not suitable for those with oily skin *sadface*.

Birchbox April 2014 Propercorn Sweet Coconut & Vanilla

Propercorn Sweet Coconut & Vanilla

I’ve been snacking on popcorn a lot recently so this was a pleasant surprise! At only 40 calories I didn’t feel even slightly guilty tucking into it and was so surprised at how sweet and flavoursome it was for such a healthy treat! I’m not the biggest fan of coconut but the flavour was very subtle and really you could have told me this was just sweet popcorn and I’d have believed you. Absolutely scrumptious and definitely going on my food shopping list!

Yet another great box from Birchbox! If you like what you’ve seen, you can get your very own monthy box of treats from www.BirchBox.co.uk for £10 & P&P.

Glossybox March 2014 Review

Glossybox is usually my favourite subscription box, and after seeing the sneak preview product I was sure this would be a great one. As it is I’m torn on my feelings for what could have been a great box but unfortunately turned into a bit of a let down.

There are five products this month (three full size) and I got a bonus as I’ve been a subscriber for one year now.

Mitchell and Peach Body Cream

Mitchell and Peach Body Cream

I wasn’t at all excited when I first saw this body cream but actually the smell won me over in an instant! It’s so deliciously natural smelling with a whole host of  organic oils and extracts including lavender, rose, vanilla, sweet violet, coconut along with English honey and shea butter. Free of parabens, SLS and synthetic colouring this is a really lovely addition to the box.

Sleek Pout Polish in Chocolate Kiss

Sleek pout polish in Chocolate Kiss

Sleek Pout Polish in Chocolate Kiss

I was so excited about this when I saw it in the sneak peek but WHY did it have to be in the most disgusting poo-brown colour ever. Am I the only one who thinks brown lipstick the most dated and awful thing? I love that it has SPF15 and I’m a big fan of pretty much everything Sleek make but I don’t think I’ll ever find any use or wear in this colour unfortunately.

Full Size

£4.49 from Sleekmakeup.com

Bellapierre Cosmetics Shimmer Powder in SP002 TwilightIMG_8553

Bellapierre Cosmetics Shimmer Powder in SP002 Twilight

Another product that could have been amazing and unfortunately just happens to be in a colour I really don’t think I will use. Amie got a gorgeous dreamy dark blue shimmer in hers (which I am totally 100% jealous of!) but I got this sandy gold. Though it’s pretty enough I just can’t see myself getting much wear out of this shade. I do however like that it is 100% pure mica.

Full Size

£12.99 from Bellapierre.co.uk

Vita Liberata pHenomonal 2-3 Week Tan Lotion

Vita Liberata pHenomonal 2-3 Week Tan Lotion

Nope. Do not want. Not only are these tiny samples but I have never ever in my life used fake tan, nor do I intend to! I fully enjoy being as pale as possible all year round and really cannot ever imagine a time where I would want to even test this out for lulz.

2 x 3ml Samples

£37.50 for 150ml from Vitaliberata.com

Dove Hair Therapy Intensive Repair 60 Second Treatment Shot

Dove Hair Therapy Intensive Repair 60 Second Treatment Shot

I love the idea of these bonus little treatments but there never seems to be quite enough for my long thick hair! Still it’s enough to give it a try, especially at it advises you to use it only on the ends of your hair.

Full Size

£1.49 from Superdrug.com

Green and Black's Organic Milk Chocolate

Green and Black’s Organic Milk Chocolate

Finally I received a tiny chocolate bar as a thank you for subscribing over a year ago, which was a lovely surprise!

So overall not an amazing box for me (though it could have been with different shades in the two full size make-up products!) but not a completely terrible one either.

If you want a Glossybox of your very own you can order one here for £10 (+ P&P)

Totally hellbent for almost getting it right

Love me Beauty March Edition 2 Review

March 17, 2014

love-me-beauty-march

Gem and I finally broke and both ordered one this months Love me Beauty box. Okay, admittedly I blame Gemma entirely – since she ordered hers first which made it impossible for me to resist.

For those that may not know, Love me Beauty is a beauty box similar to Birchbox and Glossybox, but with a twist. Each month you get to see in advance what will be in the box, and you can choose from 2-3 “menus”. Each one has 2-3 staple products with the others being unique and a little different, giving you the option to choose the box you like best.

My first box, was edition 2. Even though I knew exactly what was coming, I was still really excited to receive this bundle of joy in the post this morning.

lmb-inner

The packaging – although nothing too fancy, was perfect. There was no inner box, so on opening the outer cardboard one, you are greeted with a perfectly placed card telling you all about the contents of the box. Underneath that, wrapped delicately in shredded and tissue paper lay the contents of the box.

Whoever packed this – deserves a medal! This is -the- best packed box I’ve ever seen and everything was so beautifully placed and packed I have no idea how it survived in transit.

Enough lusting over the packaging details and onto the products:

lmb-murad

Murad – Pore and Line Minimising Hydrator – 10ml sample – £49.50 for 50ml

This claims to reduce the appearance of pores and repairs skin breakouts to reeal a more even skin tone. Recently, my skin has been very dry which has resulted in some industrial strength moisturiser from the Docs. Unfortunately this is quite thick and greasy, which has left me open (and my skin seemingly) to pores – something I’ve never really suffered with. Usually this would be thrown Gem’s way but not this time. After sampling some, it doesn’t feel too heavy on my skin which is nice and almost has a somewhat clinical smell to it. It was quite pleasant to apply so we shall see whether this proves to be useful after a few weeks of using it. At nearly £50 for the full size though, I’m not sure I’ll be splashing out on this any time soon.

lmb-blanx

BlanX – White Shock Toothpase – 15ml sample – £7.50 for 50ml

Brains and I saw the TV advert for this the other week, and for some reason it really tickles Brains. Allegedly, this toothpaste reacts to light and the more it’s exposed the more chance your teeth have of becoming whiter. I’m really intrigued to see the results of this – having seen it advertised I presumed this would be another fad that cost £20-30 a tube, but I’m quite impressed by the price tag for the full size version. Now I’m spending a little more time out in the garden, I’ll be putting this to the test. It seems to smell and look like regular toothpaste which is also a bonus.

Heres the advert for a little chuckle:

lmb-nip-fab

Nip+Fab – Post Workout Fix – Full size sample – £9.95 for 50ml

This is the largely the product that made me pick this box. I love Nip+Fab and am a huge fan of their Dry Leg fix which worked a treat. Only the other week Gem and I had a heavy gym session, which rendered us unable to walk down stairs or get back up from the loo due to significant muscle aching. I’m really looking forward to giving this a go after next weeks Gym sessions to see how it fares. The great thing about this – is that it’s almost like a roll on deodorant, so you just roll it straight onto the desired area. Easy peasy, which means you don’t have to slap on more cream resulting in slippy greasy hands. It smells like a combination of Mouthwash and BIO freeze, so I imagine the notion is quite similar to other muscle gels.

lmb-deepsteep

Deep Steep – Moisture Stick in “Honeydew Spearmint” – Full size sample – £3.60 for 15ml

I was expecting a lip balm sized stick when I saw this on ordering, but actually its much bigger. This is supposed to hydrate even the driest of skin, so it should work in perfect harmony with mine. It recommends trying it on cracked hands, lips, cuticles, heels or elbows so looks like it’s fairly multi purpose – I also noticed when checking the ingredients that there was a little note saying “we do not test on animals” which also bumped up the brownie points. This is a little like a glue stick, but when rubbing the stick onto your fingers or desired area, a little bit of the product melts gloriously onto your skin and it feels so soft and silky. I’ve tried a little on my face and it seems to be faring well. I reckon this is going to be a great addition to my festival packing and at only £3.60, it’s probably worth dropping into my hand bag for when I’m out and about. Full on impressed!

lmg-q-english

Quintessentially English – Bath Salts in “SummerSolstice” – 50g sample – £4.25 for 100g

I absolutely loath baths – but I do -love- bath salts, and like to use them to fill up my make-up brush containers. Not only do they give off a lovely smell, they keep the ends of my brushes smelling fresh too. I was expecting this to be a little bigger, but it’s not big deal. I have to say, the smell of these are just amazing. It’s infused with lemongrass, so you get that lovely lemony smell that’s not too overpowering. It almost makes me want to sit in the bath just to use it. I’m sure I will find a pot to give these little delights a home to!

lmb-vintage-cos-company

The Vintage Cosmetic Company – False Lashes in “Gracie” – Full size – £6

One of my fav bloggers reviewed these the other day and they looked so adorable. I never used to be into falsies, but ever since I started receiving them in my beauty boxes I’ve been brave enough to try them out and they really aren’t that bad to apply. These look super classy and I’ve really enjoyed a lot of the other things I’ve tried from The Vintage Cosmetic Company. Definitely going to be wearing these on my next evening out.

I’m really happy with this box and I know, with four boxes now I’m going to have to choose one of them to go! I’m going to see what next month has in store for Love me Beauty. If you’d like to get your hands on one of their boxes, head on over to their website here for just £10 plus £2.95 P&P.

March already? Phew where did winter go? Who cares, the sun is shining and my Birchbox arrived this morning!

This month’s box is a collaboration with Lulu Guinness and comes in the usual Birchbox bag-within-a-box with a chic black and white candy stripe outer card.

Featuring five products and a “lifestyle extra” it’s pretty standard fare for Birchbox and there’s a great mix of all sorts inside!

Benefit Stay Don’t Stray

Just as my trusty ELF eye primer starts to run out this gem appears in a box! I’m a lover of all things Benefit so this is a real treat, I’ve tried it out before and was really impressed so this will definitely get put to use.  Also included is a voucher for a free “Make-upper” at any Benefit counter!

Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner

I suffer with ridiculously large pores and greasy skin so am always happy to try out anything to combat that. This feels a lot like The POREfessional from Benefit (one of my absolute essentials) but with the full size at almost twice the price it needs to deliver twice the results and really there seems to be little difference at all. Still it’s definitely going to get some wear!

Aroma Works Nurture Body Oil

This body oil smells divine with a mix of 100% natural may chang, roman chamomile & sandalwood oils. Even though it’s a tiny bottle a little goes a long way and I can definitely see myself falling for this product. A small drop on the back of my hand covered my whole arm and left me smelling of lovely sweet oil all day.

I frowned in confusion when I first saw this inside it’s mini bag thinking it was a moon cup, but I’m glad to say it’s actually a massage tool for getting rid of cellulite! A really unique and fun addition to a beauty box I will definitely try this out! Birchbox march 2014 English Laundry no.7 for her

English Laundry No. 7 For Her

Perfume sample. Scoff.

No actually this is really nice and you get enough of a sample to actually wear it a few times. With top notes of pear and jasmine blended with gardenia, vanilla and sandlewood this is right up my fragrance street. If you’re a fan of sweet feminine perfumes this is pretty dreamy and it does come in a tiny atomizer so is great for just popping in the handbag. We all always complain about fragrance samples but actually when you find one you really like that you wouldn’t normally try it’s great! Definitely going to consider a full size!

Birchbox march 2014

Lulu Guinness Candy Rock

Finally this month’s lifestyle extra is a stick of stripy candy rock, which is apparently the inspiration for the Lulu Guiness spring/summer 2014 collection! Yum! Also included is a code for £20 off a £100 spend at any Lulu Guinness store or online.

So all in all a pretty amazing box for me, and one with a pretty high product value! Even though there is only one full size item, it’s cost is £3ish more than the price you pay for the whole box. I wasn’t too fussed about the Lulu Guinness theme but the addition of Benefit definitely scored a few extra brownie points for me so thanks Lulu!

If you want a Birchbox of your very own you can order one here for £10 (& £2.95 p&p)

Totally hellbent for the sweet relief of “OH! It’s not a mooncup! Hurrah!”

Latest In Beauty - Glamour Beauty Edit 2014

I tried so hard to resist this box, I really did, but last week I caved and I am SO glad I did!

Welcome to the third Glamour Beauty Edit box by Latest in Beauty! I missed out of the first, but absolutely loved the second (reviewed here!) so really my resistance was futile.

The box contains seven products worth £45 which is a little less bang for your buck than the previous boxes, but certainly nothing to turn your nose up at!

Invisibobble Latest In Beauty – Glamour Beauty Edit 2014

Invisibobble

Initially I was very sceptical about these hair ties – I mean they look like those 90’s extendible keyring things – and was convinced they would get tangled in my hair but of course I was absolutely wrong! They held my long thick hair up in a pony with only one twist and slid out without any tangles whatsoever leaving absolutely no marks on my hair at all.

I think this will be an absolute godsend on tour when I have to straighten my hair in the morning and hope it will last throughout the day, usually I end up with a mark where my bobble has held my hair back whilst we are in transit and setting up, but with the Invisibobble I wont expect even the slightest kink!

Bonus marks for the colour!

Burts Bees Lip Balm Latest In Beauty – Glamour Beauty Edit 3 – 2014

Burt’s Bees Lip Balm

I’m a big lip balm fan as I, like most people, suffer with unbearable dry lips in the colder months. I’ve had my eye on this one for a while but never got round to trying it! Made from 100% natural ingredients with a lovely tingly peppermint scent, I can see why there is so much hype about this product! It was instantly soothing on my chapped lips and has lasted out a good few hours so far. I also like how it adds moisture without feeling greasy, in fact the info card suggests using it for lipstick preparation!

Cheeky Chat Me Up Nail Paint in Tongue N Cheek Latest In Beauty – Glamour Beauty Edit 3 – 2014

Cheeky Chat Me Up Nail Paint in Tongue ‘n’ Cheek

Well! I have to say this could be a contender for my new favourite nail polish brand! The pics above make it look a lot more red than it is, but in natural light it’s a very red-hued  pink that is very glossy! It applied so smoothly (like I genuinely can’t express how easily this applies!), dried quickly and was completely opaque in one coat. This is a winning dream formula and frankly I can’t wait to try out some more polishes from Cheeky!

Daniel Sandler Long Lasting Waterproof Eyeliner Aqua Velvet Glamour beauty edit Latest in beauty 3 2014

Daniel Sandler Long Lasting Waterproof Eyeliner in Aqua Velvet

Well, this is certainly in my colour! I can’t say I’ve ever worn this shade as an eyeliner since having turquoise hair, but I will be giving it a try now! This is a bespoke shade created exclusively for the Glamour Beauty Edit, and it is BRIGHT! As you can see in the swatch it was a little uneven in application, so might take more than one sweep to get a solid line, however once it’s in place it’s really not going anywhere! It took a decent amount of micellar water to shift this off the back of my hand, so I expect it to last a damn long time on the lids!

Percy & Reed Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mousse Glamour Beauty Edit Latest in Beauty 3 2014

Percy & Reed Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mousse

I’m not really a mousse person, I find it makes my naturally greasy hair slick up (yuk!) and never seems to be strong enough to hold it up. This is probably the only product in the box I wont get much use from. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it out, but really I couldn’t see that it did anything to volumise my locks even when following exact instructions. I think my hair is just too thick and long and heavy, or maybe I’ve just never really gotten the hang of using mousse? Either way it’s not for me and will be finding a loving home with my mum (who absolutely swears by the stuff!)

Rituals Zensation Organic Rice Milk and Cherry Blossom Foaming Shower Gel Sensation Glamour beauty edit Latest in Beauty 2014

Rituals Zensation Organic Rice Milk and Cherry Blossom Foaming Shower Gel Sensation

Product names are definitely getting longer, but I digress, this is the surprise hit of the box for me! I wasn’t expecting to be excited about a shower gel but I can tell already this will be absolutely amazing! It smells divine and the texture is so light and foamy! I love that it’s so compact, so will probably throw this in my gym bag rather than lug around a bigger bottle that could spill!

L'Oreal Paris Mega Volume Miss Mange Mascara Glamour beauty Edit Latest in beauty 3 2014

L’Oreal Paris Mega Volume Miss Manga Mascara

I struggle to get hyped about mascara but I’ll admit I was curious about this one, in fact it was probably the deciding factor that pushed me over the edge into buying this box! I’m glad to say Miss Manga is an amazing mascara that gives longer thicker lashes and a hell of a curl! I think it’s down to the wand which is tapered at the tip making it perfect for lower lashes as well as upper! Miss Manga has won my heart and will be going straight into my everyday make-up bag!

Full Size

£8.99 from Superdrug.com

I also received a free Dermalogica Starter Kit, but as this offer has ended I’ll be reviewing that separately!

Overall I’m really glad I decided to buy this box as it has some great products at a massive saving and I’ve discovered some absolute treasures!

These boxes are limited edition and have been available for a while so if you do fancy one I’d suggest heading over to Latestinbeauty.com to pick on up sharpish for a bargain price of £14.95 (+3.95 p&p).

Totally hellbent for should I? shouldn’t I? OF COURSE I SHOULD!

Glossybox February 2014

February 16, 2014
Glossybox February 2014

Here’s yesterday’s Glossybox – I know usually Gem and I swap between us, but unfortunately she is busy on the mainland with Sir Roodington so to avoid it being a further week until you get to view the contents, I’ve defied all sense of normality and just gone for it. (Sorry Gem)

This was the “Valentine’s-esque” edition and the box is just so adorable! I love the themed boxes and they look so cute stacked on top of each other.

Glossybox February 2014

And finally onto the box:

Glossybox February 2014

As always, removal of the lid takes you to the most beautifully and lovingly packaged contents that you almost don’t want to spoil.

nougat

Nougat London- Sparkling Body Shimmer – 100ml sample (£14 for full size)

This was first out of the box, ordinarily I would think this was a cute body lotion, but my drawers are absolutely overflowing with lotions of all shapes and sizes at the moment and I’m finding it hard to get excited about something that makes me … well … shiny. I think if I was a slightly darker shade of “white” I might just get away with slapping some of this on my “shins” as recommended, but unfortunately my pasty self that hides behind tights and leggings doesn’t quite make the cut. Besides that, it smells nice and the bottle is quite pretty – application wise, it’s a little greasy at first but then fades into that lovely disco ball shimmery glow that people seems to be keen about these days.

nv

NV – Chunky Eye Crayon – Full Size (£5 for full size)

This is pretty spectacular in terms of application. On trying it out on my hand, grabbing a brush and playing with some blending – this was golden! (Actually more of a lilac, but hey ho). It applies well considering it’s a crayon and I love the texture, unfortunately I’m struggling to work out how and when I would get away with such a disgusting colour. My experience with purple of any kind is that I generally look like I’m on the receiving end of an abusive relationship and I just -can’t- seem to pull the look off. If anyone has any tips on how I could incorporate this into a look, please let me know because I’m desperate to use this little beauty.

ciate

Ciaté London – Paint Pot in “plastic fantastic”

When Gem and I found out we were receiving one of these in the next  Glossybox, we both squeed a little. My previous Ciaté has been well used and is such a classy colour (See one of my nail tutorials here). I was hoping for more of a red colour with it being Valentines day, but actually, this is quite a cute pink and probably something I will use and even incorporate into a few nail designs. It also forces me outside my comfort zone of RED RED RED RED RED RED … did I mention red? I’m pretty pleased with this to be honest.

giovani

Giovanni Eco Chic cosmetics – Chic Ultra Moist range – Shampoo, Condition & Hair mask sample (£7.99 for 251ml)

I’m not usually one to get excited over hair samples, I’m a bit stuck in my way’s with my current hair care regime, but these samples seem to be pretty full so I might just get one wash out of them. My only issue with this, is that it’s hard to trial it over time and see a noticeable difference. Having said that, a useful addition to my growing collection of hair samples for when I’m too poor to buy Shampoo (luckily I haven’t been there yet!)

maybelline

Maybelline New York – Big Eyes Mascara – Full Size (£8.99 for full size)

At the risk of sounding like I have some serious issues here, I also have a vast collection of unopened mascara’s and am at the point where I will not open them until I’ve used my others up for fear of them drying out. This however looks pretty interesting and has two ends – one for the lower lashes and one for the upper. I’m intrigued to see whether this makes a difference or not, so watch this space.

lindt

Lindt – Lindor Treat Bar (£0.79 for one bar)

Oh Glossybox I love you. As if stuffing my face these past two weeks wasn’t enough – throw in Brain’s breaking my cross-trainer, which means I haven’t exercised either and Birchbox plying me with Green & Blacks, you have to add to this with a juicy bar of Lindt. My 12lb loss post Christmas may have gone down the pan but this chocolate bar certainly made up for it. Nom nom nom.

There you have it, another beauty box and edging closer to three months into the year. Scary stuff! If you want to give in to Glossybox, you can subscribe here for just for £10 (+ P&P) per month.

Totally hellbent for all of the chocolate but none of the weight gain

Beauty Boxes

Birchbox February 2014

February 13, 2014

birchbox-featured

This month’s Birchbox has certainly come around quickly. The first thing I noticed however, is that they have reverted back to their old ways, with the little drawstring bag and the Birchbox cards, bound together by a cute strip of paper. Don’t get me wrong, I love their quirky cards and the drawstring bags have had their uses, but I am beginning to build up a vast collection of these and fast running out of ways in which I can use them, other than for sitting astride my dressing table, waiting to be put somewhere else. Alas, on with box:

beauty-protector

Beauty Protector – Protect & Oil – Full Size: £16 (Small glass vial sample)

An oil that promises to battle UV rays, heat and hair breakage. Perhaps not too suited to the current British Winter we are having, but I’ve recently become a little bit of a “hair oil” fan. Only needing 2-3 drops of this, means it will last me a good while and is teeny enough to sneak into my festival bags for the Summer. It smells nice and has the typical Oil texture you find in these hair products, but if used correctly, hair oil can make your locks look a treat!

eyeko

Eyeko – Skinny Liquid Eye-liner – Full Size: £12.00 (1.2g sample)

Gem and I have done pretty well at picking these up in magazines, see Gem’s post here. I love the Eyeko Skinny Mini, it applies beautifully and lasts all day. My only gripe with pen eye-liners is that they don’t last too long. Having said that, the tip is so wonderful, there is nothing stopping you from dipping it into one of your older liquid eye-liners if it fits. I have a fair few lying around that I don’t use because I hate the tip. This is definitely an eye-liner to give a whirl, especially if you aren’t overly confident at applying it – the pen shape is such a helpful addition. This was the smaller version, but still packs a punch and should last me a while.

janjira

Janjira – Argan Oil Concentrate Serum – Full Size: £49 (Small Sample)

At first glance, I thought this was -another- hair oil product, but this is actually Argan Oil for the face. Allegedly to plump and protect the skin, pat this into cleansed dry skin and follow with day or night cream. I’ve been using facial oil a lot recently which has helped my dry skin (thanks to all the humid air – courtesy of the heating being on), but I’ve read a few other beauty blogs that advice applying the oil on top of your regular cream, because this seals in the moisture. Anywhom, after trying this for a few weeks it was a great success and my skin felt much better so I’ll give this a go both pre and post facial moisturising. The smell is a little clinical though, and unless this transforms me back to my youth, I’m not sure I would spend £49 on facial oil. Saying that, it’s nice to have a little luxury in my beauty box.

leighton-denny

Leighton Denny – Nail Colour in “purely plutonic” – Full Size: £11 (Full Size Bottle)

Wow – Just wow … I love receiving Nail Varnishes, especially when the colour is as stunning as this. I bought a similar colour from Elf last year, but unfortunately the coverage was rubbish and I ended up with streaky, sticky and bumpy nails. Although not quite the same colour, this is a beautiful gun-metal. I applied two coats to the nail wheel, but I really didn’t need to. I’ve been heavily prompted into removing my red nails and exchanging it with this for today. Oh did I mention how utterly gorgeous the bottle is? My mind is already conjuring up images of other colours in the collection, lined up neatly next to each other.

gilchrist-soames

Gilchrist & Soames – The London Collection Shower Gel – Full Size:£13.75 (45ml sample)

This is probably my most disappointing product out of the box. A paraben-free formula with red tea, grape seed and milk thistle (unfortunately milk thistle reminds me of steroid abusers, who like to take this as a supplement to prevent themselves from growing moobs). Honestly, I need to stop receiving shower gel. I’ve reached the point now where I can no longer squeeze the tiniest bottles into my very large bathroom cabinets, and my box of “festival minis” is also overspilling into several other boxes. I think if this had a more alluring smell I’d be more excited, but on opening the bottle it was more reminiscent of sitting at the hair dressers – an array of random synthetic smells filling the air. So beauty boxes – for the next year, please refrain from sending me Shower Gel, unless it is L’Occitane as featured in my February’s most wanted.

green-blacks

Lifestyle Extra – Green & Black’s Dark Chocolate Mini Bar – Full Size: £2.29

I’ve received one of these before as my Lifestyle Extra and I can’t really complain. I love dark chocolate and these little samples are just enough to satisfy a sweet tooth, without you having to have the willpower to cut yourself off at half a bar and save the rest until later. My last bar sat untouched in the cupboard for months, but this one however was munched on, enjoyed and even shared with Brains as I typed out this review.

Halfway through yet another month in 2014. If’ you’d like to try Birchbox out, head on over to their website here. It’s £10 a month with £2.95 P&P. You also have the added bonus of collecting points when you complete surveys on your products, which you can spend in their shop on all the lovely products you get in  your box each month!

Totally hellbent for deep rooted nail varnish issues
