Glossybox October 2013 – Dark Romance

October 14, 2013

IMG_5816

When the preview pictures of the theme for the October Glossybox went up, I was so, so excited – Dark Romance – all thoughts of smoky eyes and deep reds and purples, but the actual box seems to bear little in way of the theme and I have to say is my least favourite since subscribing.

Katy Perry Killer Queen EDP

The first thing I noticed was the perfume sample that I already received in the Sept/Oct Miss Glossybox. I can only assume there are a great number of people like myself who subscribe to both and feel a bit cheated getting the same product twice.

1.5ml sample

50ml for £29.00 from Superdrug

Monu Illuminating Primer

I love a good primer, and this one comes highly recommended. The sample is a decent 20ml size so will get plenty of use out of it at least. I just find it hard to get super-excited about primers, perhaps this will amaze me and i’ll bite my words but it’s a bit…boring?

20ml sample

50ml for £24.95 from Monu

Premae Multi-vit Smoothie Serum

Again, I find it pretty hard to get excited about skin-care. I do like that this is allergen free and clearly marked as being vegan but it just doesn’t strike me as a WOW product.

20ml sample

50ml for £33.50 from Premae

Me Me Me Cherub’s Blush Lip & Cheek Tint

This is the only product you could even remotely tie into the “Dark Romance” theme. It’s the third or fourth Me Me Me product I’ve received in a Glossybox, and probably my least favourite. I tried a little on my cheeks and it stained where I applied before I had time to rub it in leaving me with little red stripes on my cheeks. As a lip stain it was far too watery. I’ll be sticking to my Benetint.

Full size product

12ml for £5.50 from MeMeMe

Vita Liberata Latte Illuminating Skin Finish

Definitely the worst thing I’ve ever got in a beauty box. I don’t use tanning products EVER AT ALL EVER EVER EVER and even if I did I would be disappointed at the two little sachets. I also don’t think tanned glimmering latte skin could be further away from “Dark Romance” if it tried.

2 x 3ml samples

30ml for £29.99 from Vita Liberata

Lots of people have expressed their disappointment at both the lack of adherence to the theme and the products themselves, so here’s hoping Glossybox pull something amazing out for next month to make up for it!

You can order a Glossybox here for £10 (+ P&P) per monthly box.

Totally hellbent for “oh it will be better next time”

Facemask Friday

Facemask Friday: Avon Planet Spa Dead Sea Minerals

October 11, 2013

avon planet spa dead sea

This has been one of my favourite facemasks for ages but I’ve had to do without  as it was omitted from the brochures and online for a while. Then suddenly I found an unopened tube in the back of my facemask drawer – hurrah!

These tubes last a really long time as I find you only need a very thin layer, as opposed to the sachets where you have to use it all in one go.

It works great at absorbing excess oil and minimising pores, and always leaves my skin feeling really fresh and deep cleaned – so ticks all the boxes for me!

They’re a bit tricky to get hold of, but you can sometimes find them floating around on Ebay when they are not available from the brochure.

Totally hellbent for finding lost beauty treasure!

Tip Tuesday – Sponge vs Brush

October 8, 2013

When applying foundation, consider using a brush over a sponge. Not only are they easier to clean, but they absorb less of the liquid. So you will have a nice clean brush to apply your foundation with, and will save money by reducing waste!

Totally hellbent for Scrimping

Skincare

Free L’Occitane hand cream with Marie Claire.

October 5, 2013

IMG_5752

I did a little squee when I took a look at this month’s magazine freebies. L’Occitane hand creams are my absolute favourite and there were three limited edition fragrances on offer (and the original dry skin hand cream which is the best hand cream ever!)

I went for the “rose tenderness”, but I will keep my eye out for the other two limited options “subtle violet” and “jasmine passion”

IMG_5756

They really are the most amazing hand creams, and you get a lot of hydration from only a tiny amount without leaving your hands feeling greasy.

RRP is around £8.00 for 30ml so even if you don’t want to read Marie Clarie you’re getting the hand cream for less than half price at £3.90.

I also discovered three samples inside the magazine if you want a bit more bang for your pennies;

L’Oreal Everriche shampoo – 10ml

Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula – 5ml

Totally hellbent for my favourite brands as freebies!

Honeymania Range The Body Shop

October 5, 2013

Honeymania

After seeing this pop up and becoming ever more envious when beauty bloggers from around the UK were posting pictures of their new hoard, I couldn’t wait any longer and had to grab the Shower Gel, Body Butter and Body Scrub.

Being a bit of  Body Shop fanatic, I wasn’t overly worried about the products being great, but I was in two minds about what the fragrance would be like – after all – honey is a bit of a strange thing to smell of right?

As per usual, it arrived promptly within the next few days, was packaged in a lovely reusable little brown box (this is the least I’ve ever ordered online!) and I couldn’t wait to crack it open. The body butter I tried straight away, lovely and thick it applied nicely as do all of the body butters in their range. I have to say, I was surprised at how moisturising it was and my skin felt soft for most of the day. I was definitely impressed and am thinking about switching to this from my Vitamin E range … I know right!

My only downside to The Body Shop, is that some of their body scrubs and polishes don’t make me feel as though I’ve exfoliated. The best by far is the Chocomania and the Shea butter scrubs and I absolutely adore these. Although the Honeymania scrub isn’t as course, it made me feel very hydrated. It felt more like an exfoliating body butter due to it’s thickness and was so luxuriously creamy that I kind of wanted to have another shower just so I could use it again.

Finally, the body wash – which cleaned me – there’s not much else I can say on this, other than it didn’t dry my skin out despite being fragranced. Which by the way, is beautiful. It smells of honey, but not in a weird way, it can not be explained, which means you will probably have to try it for yourself!

Overall I am well chuffed with this, usually when buying new items I like to smell and test them before purchase, but luckily The Body Shop once again outdid themselves.

Totally hellbent for ad-hoc internet purchases

The Body Shop Vitamin E Skincare Range Part 2

October 5, 2013

Vitamin E

Here is Part 2 of my Vitamin E blog.

From left to right: Moisture Cream, Illuminating Moisture Cream, Intense Moisture Cream, Nourishing Night Cream

Moisture Cream:

This was the first Vitamin E moisturiser I bought. It’s light weight, gives enough hydration to last the day and is wonderful for mixing with foundations. I absolutely loved the texture of this and how my skin felt when I used it for the first time, I blame my Vitamin E devotion on this product alone as I was hooked instantly!

Illuminating Moisture Cream:

My first experience of illuminated face creams – this gives off a slight pink shimmer/glow. Much nicer than the Superdrug illuminating Vitamin E cream, but I have to be in the right mood to wear this. I find if I am having a “natural” looking day, I might opt for this to give me a flush of colour without using foundation, but less is definitely more with this!

Intense Moisture Cream:

My winter go to cream – moisturiser for dry skin, should be so thick that if you turn the tub upside down, it stays put. This is one of the best moisturisers I’ve found for combating my horrible dry skin during the central heating induced Winter months. With the cold seasons ploughing towards us, I will be reaching for this sooner rather than later.

Nourishing Night Cream:

More recently, I have been experimenting with other moisturisers, but when I use Vitamin E, I use the night cream to go with it. Similar to the Intense Moisture Cream, this is much thicker in consistency, so when I wake in the morning I don’t feel like I’ve had my head in a tumble dryer. It has that luxurious feel when you apply it without making your skin feel suffocated.

Since I own almost all of The Body Shops Vitamin E range, I also recommend the following:

Totally hellbent for (in case you hadn’t noticed) Vitamin E everything

I listened to Carcass’ new album, and I liked it – how elitism should work

October 3, 2013

ticketseliteblog

In my eyes, there are two types of elitists when it comes to metal.

First up there’s the ones who, no matter how much jazz they listen to, will always f*****g love metal. They would -die- for metal, and are the truest of the true. They understand the concept of wearing a different band hoodie to the t-shirt they’re wearing and would never wear the t-shirt of the band they are going to see. They are open to new bands of similar genres, but are also reserved in terms of their taste. Most of the time, if they love a band, it’s because they have been listening to them for years and not just because their boyfriend likes them, or they read it’s the new “cool” thing to like in Kerrang!.

The second, is the type who ruins elitism for the elitists. The type of people who are stuck in the dark ages and believes that their favourite band who they have been following since they were 15 are now sell outs because they are playing to more than that ten people. The sort of person who will only like bands that no on has heard of – just so they can be “elite” and instantly decides that they hate Children of Bodom and Cradle of Filth (even though they own all their earlier albums) because small children now like them.

There’s a fine line when it comes to elitism. I believe it’s about liking what you want to like and sticking by that.

A few examples here, my path into the metal genre, when I was a wee child of 12/13 years old came  through Carcass and Children of Bodom. When I was younger, these were the best bands in the world! Unfortunately, the latter Bodom albums were less to be desired and I really did not like them. Part of me felt as though some of these tracks were written, solely to “fit in” to the current scene. On the other hand, Carcass experimented with Swansong and Heartwork. I don’t believe they did this for the purpose of becoming “sell outs” and that perhaps they were genuinely trying something new out. It was a vast leap from their early grindcore era, but they were obviously enjoying themselves, which is what counts. I am not afraid to say that I very much enjoyed the Heartwork and Swansong era and following on from that, I love their new album.

Another example is Behemoth. Now I have followed them from their earlier black metal stuff to their newer stuff – I love each and every album they have produced. The first 4-5 times I saw them live, it was to a small room of people, no more than 15. It was truly epic and such an intimate experience. One of my earlier memories was watching that at the old Edwards No 8 in Birmingham and the stage was no more than a “step”, I was headbanging and hit my head off Nergal’s guitar. Moving on from this, I saw them at Hellfest and Bloodstock Open Air with a beautiful set up and stage show. Although it saddened me that gone were the days I could see them in intimate venues, I was proud that they had got to where they are today. After all, making music should be a love and what better way to earn a living, than to do something you love!

Although as a band Dakesis aren’t in it for “the money” it would certainly be nice to be able to live a comfortable life and get something back for all the hard work we put in. My appreciation for other bands has certainly grown since living the life myself. All my annual leave would be taken up on tours and gigs, we would have to find petrol money to take us up and down the country, the wear and tear on our vehicles. Money to pay our accommodation when out of town not to mention the hours we put in when writing, recording and rehearsing. On top of that, we have all the costs involved with releasing an album and merchandise.

So next time you see your favourite band play to 100,000 people, don’t be a dick. Take a moment to appreciate all the hard work they put in, not only for their love of music, but for their love and respect of you – their fan.

Above all – keep it true.

Totally hellbent for elitism without being an arsehole

The Body Shop Vitamin E Skincare Range Part 1

October 3, 2013

Vitamin E 2

As much as I like to mix and match, the Vitamin E collection from The Body Shop is a use together must. I thought about separating all of these lovely things to review but I just can’t split them up! Therefore this is part 1 of 2.

From left to right:

The mini moisturisers I will talk about in part 2 of this blog, but honestly, this is -the- best Skincare range I have ever encountered. I am utterly obsessed with everything Vitamin E based and adore the packaging, the smell and the textures of all of these products.

Moisture Serum:

I use this underneath my moisturiser and my face feels like it wants to do a happy dance from the feeling it gives. The only time I don’t use a serum, is when I am wearing heavy makeup and I’m wearing foundation.

Cleanser & Toner

I bought the mini set to begin with to try these out, and was hooked instantly. Although they have a fragrance to them, my skin does not react at all. I have never experienced stinging, redness or the feeling of my skin drying out and my skin feels thoroughly cleansed afterwards. I keep the mini bottles and fill them up when I go away which is also an added bonus. I do the same with my moisturisers)

BB Cream:

I picked this up last time I was in store to try it out. It’s my least loved out of all their stuff. The texture is nice, but as you may be able to see from the picture, it’s quite dark. My favourite thing to do with this, is to mix it with my foundation instead of putting on moisturiser first. I get a nice but of coverage then and my foundation seems to go on better.

Body Butter:

Whenever I go into The Body Shop, I generally end up leaving with one of these. I love the texture and it’s not too greasy, this is definitely an every day body butter for me. Plus it kind of completes things when you have just Vitamin E’d your face to death!

I would definitely recommend trying this out if your Skin is more dry/sensitive. Make sure you stay tuned for Part 2!

Hellbent for owning absolutely everything in a range!

Make-up

Almost-free bargain eye-shadow storage

October 1, 2013

Bargain make-up organizer

I’m feeling very pleased with myself right now. I’ve spent a fortune on pots and drawers and organizers and dressing tables and all sorts of things to try and keep my large make-up collection easy to navigate, but one thing always seems to be all over the place and that is my single eye-shadows. I have three drawers worth of theses and sadly they are mostly neglected in favour of palettes as they are a mess!

The answer to my problem came in the simplest of places – this plastic divider came from some cherry tomatoes from my local Tesco!

Bargain make-up organizer 2

I’ll be saving these up for a little while to organize my whole stash, and as I’ll be eating the yummy tomatoes too it’s practically free!

Totally Hellbent for frugal solutions!
